Summer ‘24: Exciting News!!!!

I am Returning to the DR!

After spending the past year teaching in the Dominican Republic- I am excited to officially say that I am coming back to teach another year at Doulos Discovery School. Woooo!!!!!

Okay okay… most people already knew this, but I did want to explain why. So here is a whole page dedicated to just that.

Now if you have been keeping up with my adventure, and are interested in supporting me financially, please pray about it. And if the Lord leads you, click the button below, you can send me a one time gift, or join my monthly support team!

Thank You

If you’re reading this, I cannot thank you enough for being a part of this journey with me. My job is 100% support based, meaning all my financial gifts come together and forms my monthly paycheck! I know, it is an exciting way to live.

So if you have been supporting me financially, or with prayer, or with friendship (cheesy, but I mean it lol)- please know- I could not be doing this without you, and I appreciate you so so much.

Okay, below you will find 3 main sections. The first being the academic work that I am doing- again their education is so so important to me. The next section is the discipleship and spiritual things that have been going on- which is such a big deal. The last, is a break down of financial things, if you are thinking maybe this is something you want to invest in, take a look at what that means.

please enjoy!

These goobers took my phone…

Academics.

I am a teacher (duh), and I care a lot about my students as human beings- and with that I very deeply care that they are getting a quality education. They work really hard, but they also play hard in my classroom. So heres whats going on in the science world at Doulos…

To recap, this year I taught Physics 2 and Biology [in English] (and gained the reputation of having very hard tests). At Doulos a large population of our students want to be doctors, engineers, and architects when they grow up. Those are all very STEM heavy pursuits and I do not take that lightly.

In physics, I accounted for that by pushing them heavily not just in the scientific thought and theory- but they had to tackle trigonometry, intense algebra, and a small amount of calculus- along with learning Microsoft Excel. I cannot stress enough- if you want to be an engineer please please take physics BEFORE you go to college- it is such a new way of thinking. But through a lot of tedious grading, they learned critical thinking and problem solving through technique- to the point where I could even spend time teaching fluid mechanics (which I took as a second year engineer at USC).

In biology there was not a topic we shied away from. Not only did they need to remember they basic ideas, vocabulary, and principles of life science, but they then had to understand how it works, and why it works the way it does. Our class kept compounding onto itself so they could understand life at a very deep level, and then be able to sort through what happens when things go wrong, and why they went wrong. Again, the goal is to teach them how to sort through facts &use that to propel them off into deeper thoughts and discussions.

What is the most exciting to me, is I will get them all again next year for chemistry! Yes, everyone next year will be in high school chemistry. Why? Well, my goal is to get them ready for college- and to set them up to be ready to study STEM- so we had to do a little bit of class restructuring so that by the time they graduate they have taken an in depth chemistry course, anatomy and physiology and physics 2. STEM success beyond high school is difficult without a strong foundation.

I know this could sound intense, but please remember we have so much fun learning in my room- we chant latin roots, we sing songs, we write children’s stories, we make memes, we scrap book…just go along with my madness!

Discipleship.

My personal favorite part of my job at Doulos is being able to disciple the high school kids. I say this a lot, but Doulos kids are very honest in whether they believe in God, they don’t believe in God, or they just don’t know, and I love this honesty.

I love it because after a couple months of working there, I gained trust and the right to speak into their lives- to the point where I would often have kids wander into my room, grab a seat and tell me everything that is going on. They would let me listen, and seek help- but what was crazy to me was seeing them apply the godly advice that I would give them. Because truly, it is very difficult to get a teenager to do something they don’t necessarily want to do. I have also worked with a lot of high school kids- and its not often that they actually do what you suggest they should consider doing. And because of these conversations I got to see kids begin to read their bibles, seek out what a relationship with Jesus actually looks like, seek mentorship, set up healthy boundaries in their relationships with other, seek to forgive others and resolve conflict…etc.

& I say all of this to say look at the work that God is doing down there through this ministry!!!! Lives are being impacted and changed, hearts are being turned, The Gospel is being sought!!! This is my favorite part of my job because I so abundantly see God at work here & kids get to see how loved they are.

Finances.

Again, if the ministry I do is something that resonates with you in some way, please pray and consider supporting me and the work that I do. Below is the link to my page.

Let me explain: I only get “paid” what I fundraise- so your gift directly impacts the mission God gave us to reach and disciple the world (which I think is kinda cool)- by being my monthly paycheck to teach at Doulos.

[Also see: John 20: 21, Matt 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-16, Luke 24: 47, Acts 1:8]

Now if you wonder what I do with the money- its not that fun but its pretty much this:

  • Rent and & the HOA (yes there is an HOA there kinda wild)

  • Food [I really love hot vegetables]

  • My Phone Bill (I have a Dominican number- thats so cool to me)

  • Gas

  • Health insurance

  • Motto insurance

  • Electricity and bills like that

  • Student Loans*

*My goal this summer is raise extra monthly support to alleviate my monthly student loan payment- to be transparent with you.

These things might not seem special- but being able to afford my bills, allows me to be there and do all of this awesome work that I am blessed to do. Like for example, visiting La Joya Abajo and helping my friend remove stitches from a mans head. (La Joya Abajo is where a large community of Haitians live (see photo on the right))

My Dominican Pastor recently told us missionaries that it is a “miracle” and “victory” that we are there in Jarabacoa working to advance the kingdom of God- and if you are reading this- I want to tell you- that you are a part of this miracle. You are a part of this victory. You are in it alongside me in some way, shape, or form- & thank you for that.
